The Difference Between Cold-Melt Laminators and Hot-Melt Laminators

Hot melt laminators utilize hot melt adhesive technology, where the adhesive must be heated to melt before being applied to the laminating material. Pressure is then applied to bond the laminating material to the printed substrate on heated rollers. After cooling, the laminated sheets are cut. This process requires heating time during lamination, resulting in relatively lower efficiency.
II. Application Scope
Cold laminators are suitable for laminating thin printed materials such as books, banners, and posters. The thick adhesive coating provides high water resistance and abrasion resistance to the laminated prints.
Hot laminators are suitable for laminating thicker materials like paper or packaging boxes. They enhance the gloss and texture of printed materials but offer lower water resistance and abrasion resistance after lamination.
III. Operating Costs
Cold laminators primarily consume cold adhesive, allowing for the use of relatively inexpensive glue. Operating costs are lower, and since no heating is required, heating expenses are eliminated.
Hot laminators require hot melt adhesive and continuous heating during lamination, resulting in higher costs. Additionally, the heating process generates waste heat and harmful gases, causing environmental impact.
IV. Summary
In summary, both cold glue and hot glue laminators have distinct advantages and disadvantages, necessitating selection based on specific requirements. For laminating thinner printed materials, cold glue laminators offer lower operating costs and higher efficiency. For enhancing the texture of thicker printed items, hot glue laminators are the preferred choice.
